Anavar and Testosterone Cypionate Stack: How to Run a Cutting Cycle With Clinical Rationale
The Anavar and testosterone cypionate stack is the most widely used male cutting cycle for a reason: it combines two compounds that solve each other’s weaknesses through completely different pharmacological pathways. Testosterone keeps your body functioning normally while providing the primary anabolic signal. Anavar adds a dry, non-aromatising oral that repartitions nutrients toward muscle and away from fat, while simultaneously unlocking more of the testosterone you are injecting by stripping away the protein that normally binds and inactivates it. Most guides give you a list of doses and a timeline. This article explains why each component is there, what it is doing at each stage, what the interaction between the two compounds actually looks like inside your body, and how to manage every variable from oestrogen to lipids to post-cycle recovery. At Hemi Pharma UK, we want you to understand this stack well enough to adjust it intelligently, not just follow a template.
What Happens Inside Your Body When You Run Anavar Without Testosterone?
Understanding why the Anavar and testosterone cypionate stack exists starts with understanding what goes wrong when you leave the testosterone out. This is not a theoretical risk; it is a predictable physiological cascade that most Anavar-only users experience within the first 2 to 3 weeks.
Oxandrolone binds to the androgen receptor in your muscles, bones, and other tissues. When your pituitary gland detects elevated androgen activity (from the oxandrolone), it reduces its output of luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) through a feedback loop called the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. LH is the chemical messenger that tells your testicles to produce testosterone. When LH drops, testosterone production drops with it. Clinical data shows this suppression begins at doses as low as 2.5mg per day: Malhotra et al. (1993) documented a 58% reduction in serum testosterone and a 35% reduction in LH from this tiny dose in boys with constitutional delay.
At a typical bodybuilding Anavar dosage of 40 to 60mg per day, LH suppression is near-total within 7 to 14 days. Your testicles are still physically capable of producing testosterone, but they are receiving almost no signal to do so. The result is a serum testosterone level in the hypogonadal range, often below 5 nmol/L (normal is 10 to 35 nmol/L).
Now here is the critical point most guides miss: oxandrolone is a poor replacement for testosterone in your body. Testosterone does far more than build muscle. It regulates the production of red blood cells in your bone marrow (which is why low testosterone causes fatigue and poor endurance). It maintains the sensitivity of your dopamine receptors in the brain (which is why low testosterone causes flat mood, low motivation, and an inability to feel pleasure from things you normally enjoy). It drives libido through both central nervous system effects and local effects on erectile tissue. It maintains synovial fluid production in your joints (which is why many Anavar-only users report dry, achy joints within 2 to 3 weeks). It supports sleep architecture by influencing the ratio of slow-wave to REM sleep. It regulates insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle.
Oxandrolone replaces none of these functions. It occupies the androgen receptor in muscle, which provides some anabolic signalling, but it does not convert to oestradiol (which is necessary for joint health, lipid metabolism, and bone density in men), it does not convert to dihydrotestosterone in the same tissues that testosterone does, and it does not provide the full spectrum of metabolic and neurological support that testosterone delivers.
This is why running Anavar without testosterone produces the characteristic “Anavar-only crash” around weeks 2 to 4: progressively worsening fatigue, flattened mood, disappearing libido, dry and painful joints, poor sleep, irritability, and eventually a training experience so miserable that users either abandon the cycle early or suffer through diminishing returns. The muscle-building signal from oxandrolone is still active, but the body as a whole is falling apart because it has lost its testosterone foundation.
How Does Testosterone Cypionate Solve This Problem and Why This Ester Specifically?
Adding testosterone cypionate to your Anavar cycle replaces every drop of testosterone that oxandrolone suppresses, plus more. The exogenous testosterone binds to the same receptors, converts to the same metabolites (oestradiol via aromatase, DHT via 5-alpha reductase), and performs the same physiological functions as the testosterone your testicles would normally produce. You maintain normal mood, libido, joint health, sleep quality, red blood cell production, and insulin sensitivity throughout the cycle, while adding oxandrolone’s specific benefits on top.
Testosterone cypionate is preferred for this stack because of its half-life. The cypionate ester extends testosterone’s half-life to approximately 5 to 6 days, meaning that injecting twice per week (every 3.5 days) produces remarkably stable blood levels with minimal peaks and troughs. Compare this to testosterone propionate (half-life 0.8 to 1 day, requiring daily or every-other-day injections) or testosterone suspension (no ester, requiring daily injections). The cypionate ester gives you pharmaceutical stability with practical convenience.
Testosterone enanthate is the other common choice and is functionally interchangeable. The enanthate ester gives a half-life of approximately 4.5 to 5 days, slightly shorter than cypionate. In practice, the two produce nearly identical blood levels when injected on the same schedule. The choice between them is personal preference and availability, not pharmacology.
When you inject testosterone cypionate, the ester is cleaved by enzymes in the muscle tissue (esterases), releasing free testosterone into the bloodstream. This free testosterone then circulates, binds to SHBG and albumin, enters target cells, and performs all the functions described above. The key is that this process provides a continuous, predictable supply of testosterone that replaces and exceeds what oxandrolone has suppressed.
How Does Anavar’s SHBG Suppression Turn 200mg of Testosterone Into Something Much Stronger?
This is the interaction that makes the Anavar and testosterone cypionate stack genuinely synergistic rather than simply additive. Understanding it changes how you think about dosing both compounds, and it is the reason experienced users consistently report that this stack “feels” stronger than the testosterone dose alone would suggest.
Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is a protein manufactured by your liver. Its job is to bind to sex hormones in the bloodstream and control how much of them are available to enter cells. Think of SHBG as a molecular cage: when testosterone is bound to SHBG, it is locked up, circulating in your blood but unable to enter muscle cells, fat cells, or any other tissue. It is biologically inert. In a normal man, approximately 65 to 70% of total circulating testosterone is bound to SHBG. Another 25 to 30% is loosely bound to albumin (and can dissociate relatively easily). Only 1 to 3% circulates as truly free testosterone, which is the fraction that enters cells and activates the androgen receptor.
Oxandrolone is one of the most potent SHBG suppressors of any anabolic steroid. When oxandrolone passes through the liver (which happens with every dose, since it is an oral compound), it suppresses the liver’s production of SHBG protein. Clinical data from Turner syndrome patients showed that even 1.25mg per day of oxandrolone (a dose so low it would be considered negligible for bodybuilding) reduced median SHBG from 70.3 nmol/L to 10.3 nmol/L. That is an 85% reduction in the protein that binds and inactivates your testosterone.
Now apply this to your Anavar and testosterone cypionate stack. You inject 200mg of testosterone cypionate per week. Without Anavar, approximately 65 to 70% of the resulting circulating testosterone is bound to SHBG and unavailable. Your free testosterone level might be, say, 25 to 35 pg/mL (a rough example for illustration). Now you add 40mg of Anavar per day. Within days, your SHBG plummets. Suddenly, a much larger fraction of that same 200mg of testosterone is free and available to enter cells. Your free testosterone might rise to 50 to 70 pg/mL, despite the fact that you are injecting the same amount of testosterone. You have not increased your testosterone dose, but you have functionally doubled or tripled the amount of testosterone that is actually reaching your muscles, your brain, and every other androgen-responsive tissue.
This is not theoretical speculation. Wasserman et al. (2008) documented this interaction directly in three HIV-infected men receiving both testosterone replacement therapy and oxandrolone. They found that the combination drove SHBG levels so low that total testosterone readings appeared paradoxically suppressed, because the binding protein was no longer holding testosterone in the bloodstream. The testosterone was not gone; it had been released from its SHBG cage and was being rapidly taken up by tissues, clearing faster from the blood. When oxandrolone was discontinued, SHBG rose back to normal, testosterone readings normalised, and symptoms improved (Wasserman et al., 2008, J Sex Med).
The practical consequence is profound for how you dose this stack. Because Anavar amplifies the effective testosterone dose through SHBG suppression, you do not need high testosterone doses to get strong results. 200 to 300mg of testosterone cypionate per week with 40mg of Anavar per day produces a free testosterone environment that rivals 400 to 500mg of testosterone alone, but with substantially less aromatisation, less water retention, less blood pressure elevation, and less haematocrit increase. The Anavar and testosterone cypionate stack lets you get “high-dose results” from a “moderate-dose protocol,” which is why it is the preferred approach for users who want results without unnecessary side effects.
What Does the Complete Week-by-Week Cycle Look Like and Why Is Each Phase Structured This Way?
Weeks 1 to 2: testosterone cypionate only (building the foundation)
Inject testosterone cypionate at 200 to 300mg per week, split into two injections (Monday and Thursday, or any two days approximately 3.5 days apart). Each injection is 100 to 150mg depending on your chosen weekly dose.
Why start testosterone two weeks before adding Anavar? Testosterone cypionate takes approximately 4 to 5 half-lives to reach steady-state blood levels. With a half-life of 5 to 6 days, steady state arrives at around 25 to 30 days, but functionally stable levels are achieved within 10 to 14 days. Starting testosterone first ensures your androgen base is fully established before Anavar begins suppressing your natural production. It also gives you a 2-week window to assess how you feel on testosterone alone: your energy, mood, libido, sleep, and injection site tolerance. If something feels wrong (unusual injection reactions, mood disturbance, unexplained symptoms), you can address it before adding a second compound.
During these first two weeks, your natural testosterone production is being suppressed by the exogenous testosterone (the same HPG axis feedback loop described earlier). But because the exogenous testosterone is replacing what you lose, you should feel normal or better than normal. If you feel worse during this phase, something is wrong with your dosing, injection technique, or product quality, and you should troubleshoot before adding Anavar.
Weeks 3 to 10: testosterone cypionate plus oxandrolone (the active cutting phase)
Continue testosterone cypionate at the same dose. Add oxandrolone (Anavar) at 40mg per day, split into two 20mg doses taken approximately 12 hours apart (for example, 8am and 8pm). Oxandrolone has a half-life of 9 to 10 hours, so twice-daily dosing maintains the most stable blood levels.
Within the first 3 to 5 days of adding Anavar, you will begin to notice the SHBG suppression effect. Lifts may feel slightly easier. Muscle fullness and hardness typically increase. You may notice more prominent vascularity, especially during and after training. These effects are partly from oxandrolone’s direct anabolic activity and partly from the increased free testosterone caused by SHBG suppression.
By weeks 2 to 3 of the Anavar addition (weeks 4 to 5 of the overall cycle), the repartitioning effect becomes visible. If you are in a calorie deficit of 300 to 500 calories, your rate of visual change accelerates: you are losing fat while maintaining or even slowly gaining lean tissue. The scale may not move dramatically, because you are simultaneously losing fat weight and gaining (or retaining) lean weight, but the mirror and waist measurements will show clear progress.
Weeks 6 to 8 of the overall cycle are where most users see the most dramatic visual changes. Anavar has been in your system long enough for the full repartitioning effect to manifest, testosterone is at steady state, and several weeks of calorie deficit have mobilised enough body fat to reveal underlying muscle definition. This is the period where the “Anavar look” emerges: dry, hard, vascular, with visible separation between muscle groups.
Weeks 9 to 10 are the final push. Anavar has been running for 8 weeks, which is the standard safe duration for a 17-alpha-alkylated oral steroid. Liver enzymes will have risen from baseline (typically 1.5 to 3 times the upper limit of normal at this point), and HDL cholesterol will be significantly suppressed. These are manageable for 8 weeks but become concerning with longer exposure. This is why Anavar cycles are typically capped at 8 weeks. The testosterone continues through week 10 to maintain the androgen base after Anavar stops.
Weeks 11 to 12: testosterone cypionate only (bridge to PCT)
Anavar stops at the end of week 10. Testosterone continues for 1 to 2 more weeks (through the end of week 11 or 12). This bridge period allows the Anavar to clear your system (which happens within 2 to 3 days given its 9 to 10 hour half-life) while maintaining testosterone support. Your SHBG begins recovering during this period, which means your free testosterone level will decrease even though your injection dose has not changed. Some users notice a slight “softening” of the hard, dry look during this bridge, which is the return of normal SHBG binding.
The final testosterone injection is at the end of week 11 or 12, depending on your plan. From this point, you wait approximately 14 days for the cypionate ester to clear before starting PCT.
Weeks 13 to 14: waiting period (testosterone clearing)
No injections, no orals. You are waiting for the testosterone cypionate to clear your system. With a half-life of 5 to 6 days, five half-lives (approximately 25 to 30 days) would bring levels to near zero. However, functional clearance (levels low enough that your HPG axis can begin recovering) occurs within 10 to 14 days.
During this waiting period, you will feel the effects of declining testosterone: energy drops, libido fades, mood flattens. This is normal and temporary. It is the window where your body transitions from relying on exogenous testosterone to restarting endogenous production.
This is where HCG can be invaluable. Injecting HCG at 1,000 to 1,500 IU twice per week during weeks 13 to 14 mimics LH at the testicular level, stimulating your Leydig cells to produce testosterone and maintaining testicular size and responsiveness. Your HPG axis is still suppressed at the pituitary level, but the testicles are being “kept alive” by the HCG, so when the SERM-based PCT begins and actual LH starts flowing again, the testicles are primed and ready to respond. Users who skip HCG during this period often report slower, harder recovery because their testicles have been dormant for 10+ weeks and take longer to restart.
Weeks 15 to 18: post-cycle therapy (restarting natural production)
Tamoxifen at 20mg per day for 4 weeks, or clomiphene citrate at 50mg per day for 4 weeks. Both are selective oestrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) that block oestrogen’s negative feedback on the pituitary gland, causing it to release more LH and FSH, which in turn stimulates testosterone production in the testicles.
Tamoxifen is generally preferred for PCT after an Anavar and testosterone cypionate cycle because it is better tolerated (fewer visual side effects and mood disturbances than clomiphene at equivalent doses) and has well-documented efficacy at restarting LH and testosterone in the post-anabolic-steroid context. Some users combine both (tamoxifen 20mg plus clomiphene 25mg per day) for the first 2 weeks, then drop to tamoxifen alone for weeks 3 to 4.
By the end of PCT (week 18), most men will have recovered testosterone levels to within the low-normal range. Full recovery to pre-cycle levels typically takes another 2 to 4 weeks beyond the end of PCT, for a total of approximately 6 to 10 weeks from last injection to full hormonal recovery. During recovery, maintain your training intensity and protein intake to preserve the lean mass gained during the cycle.
How Should You Manage Oestrogen During This Stack?
Oestrogen management in the Anavar and testosterone cypionate stack is more nuanced than in a testosterone-only cycle, because the SHBG suppression from Anavar changes the equation.
Testosterone converts to oestradiol (the primary oestrogen in men) through an enzyme called aromatase, which is concentrated in fat tissue, breast tissue, and the liver. The rate of aromatisation is proportional to the amount of free testosterone available: more free testosterone means more substrate for aromatase, which means more oestradiol production.
When Anavar suppresses your SHBG and increases your free testosterone, it is also indirectly increasing the amount of testosterone available for aromatisation. This means that 200mg of testosterone cypionate with 40mg of Anavar may produce more oestradiol than 200mg of testosterone alone, even though you have not changed your testosterone dose. Some users who experience no oestrogen-related symptoms on 200mg of testosterone alone find that they develop mild symptoms (water retention, sensitive nipples, bloating) when they add Anavar, which seems counterintuitive because Anavar itself does not aromatise. The explanation is the SHBG-mediated increase in free testosterone available for aromatisation.
Anastrozole at 0.25 to 0.5mg taken on injection days (twice per week) is the standard approach. Start at 0.25mg twice weekly and increase only if symptoms appear. Over-suppressing oestrogen is as problematic as high oestrogen: crashed oestradiol causes severe joint pain, destroyed libido, flattened mood, and impaired lipid metabolism. The goal is symptom management, not elimination of oestrogen.
The best approach is to get bloodwork including a sensitive oestradiol assay (E2 by LC-MS/MS, not the standard immunoassay which is less accurate in men) at week 4 or 5 of the cycle. This tells you your actual oestradiol level at the point where SHBG suppression is fully established and gives you a data-driven basis for AI dosing rather than guessing.
What Exactly Should Your Blood Work Look Like Before, During, and After This Stack?
Running an Anavar and testosterone cypionate stack without blood work is like driving without a speedometer: you have no idea whether you are in the safe zone or about to crash until something goes wrong. Here is exactly what to test, when to test it, and what each number means.
Baseline (1 to 2 weeks before starting)
Total testosterone, free testosterone, LH, FSH, oestradiol (sensitive assay), SHBG, full lipid panel (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides), liver function (ALT, AST, GGT, bilirubin), complete blood count (including haematocrit and haemoglobin), fasting glucose, kidney function (creatinine, BUN), PSA (if over 40).
This baseline establishes your “normal.” Every mid-cycle and post-cycle reading is compared against this. Without it, you have no reference point to determine whether a number is elevated, suppressed, or unchanged.
Mid-cycle (week 5 to 6)
Repeat the full panel. At this point, testosterone should be supraphysiological (reflecting your injection dose plus the SHBG amplification). SHBG should be significantly suppressed (often below 15 nmol/L). LH and FSH should be near zero (confirming full HPG suppression). HDL will likely be below 30 mg/dL and possibly below 25 mg/dL. ALT and AST will be elevated (typically 1.5 to 3 times upper limit). Haematocrit may be rising (watch for values above 52 to 54%). Oestradiol will guide your AI dosing.
What each number tells you: HDL below 25 mg/dL means your cardiovascular risk is elevated; consider shortening the Anavar portion or reducing the dose. ALT or AST above 3 times normal means liver stress is significant; add or increase TUDCA (250 to 500mg per day) and NAC (600 to 1200mg per day). Haematocrit above 54% means your blood is thickening; reduce the testosterone dose or donate blood (consult a doctor first). Oestradiol above 40 to 50 pg/mL with symptoms means increase the anastrozole dose by 0.25mg per week.
Post-PCT (4 to 6 weeks after finishing PCT)
Repeat the full panel. At this point, testosterone should be recovering toward baseline (at least low-normal range). LH and FSH should be measurable and rising. SHBG should be returning to baseline. HDL should be recovering toward baseline (the 2024 bodybuilding study showed recovery to 49 mg/dL within 3 months). Liver enzymes should be back to normal. If testosterone, LH, or FSH are still severely suppressed at this point, your PCT may have been insufficient or you may need additional recovery time.
What Should You Eat During an Anavar and Testosterone Cypionate Cut?
The pharmacology of this stack directly informs your nutrition strategy. Anavar increases muscle protein fractional synthetic rate by 44% (Sheffield-Moore, 1999), meaning your muscles are 44% more efficient at building new protein. But this synthetic machinery needs raw material. If you restrict protein intake too aggressively during your calorie deficit, the increased synthetic rate has nothing to work with, and you are wasting much of the compound’s anabolic potential.
Protein should be set at 2.2 to 2.5g per kg of bodyweight per day, non-negotiable. For an 85kg man, that is 187 to 213g of protein daily. This is higher than the standard cutting recommendation of 1.6 to 2.0g per kg because you have pharmacologically enhanced protein synthesis running, and you want to feed it fully.
Total calories should be set at a deficit of 300 to 500 calories below your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). The Anavar and testosterone cypionate stack provides sufficient muscle-sparing signalling that a moderate deficit produces fat loss without muscle wasting. Aggressive deficits (800 to 1,000+ calories) overwhelm even the pharmacological muscle protection and result in lean mass loss alongside fat loss, defeating the purpose of the stack.
Fat should not drop below 0.7 to 0.8g per kg of bodyweight per day. Dietary fat is necessary for hormone synthesis (including the testosterone you are injecting, which depends on cholesterol-derived precursors), cell membrane integrity, and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Aggressive fat restriction during a cycle impairs recovery and can worsen the lipid disruption already caused by Anavar.
Carbohydrates fill the remaining calories after protein and fat are set. Prioritise carbohydrates around training (before and after) to support performance and glycogen replenishment. Anavar increases creatine phosphate resynthesis in muscle, which is an ATP-dependent process that benefits from adequate carbohydrate availability.
Why Does Product Quality Determine Whether This Stack Works as Described?
Every interaction described in this article depends on accurate dosing of both compounds. If your testosterone cypionate is underdosed, your androgen base is weaker than intended, oestrogen conversion is lower than expected (which sounds positive but means your anastrozole dose may be too high, crashing your oestradiol), and the SHBG amplification from Anavar has less testosterone to amplify. If your oxandrolone is actually metandienone (the most common substitution in counterfeit “Anavar”), you are adding an aromatising oral to your stack: water retention, bloating, gynecomastia risk, and a completely different side effect profile to what you planned for.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if you run Anavar without testosterone?
Your natural testosterone will be severely suppressed within 2 to 3 weeks. Even at 2.5mg per day, oxandrolone reduces testosterone by 58%. At bodybuilding doses (40 to 60mg), suppression is near-total. Without exogenous testosterone to replace it, you experience progressive fatigue, flattened mood, absent libido, joint pain, poor sleep, and diminishing training performance. The muscle-building signal from Anavar remains active, but your body’s overall function deteriorates because testosterone regulates far more than just muscle: mood, cognition, red blood cell production, joint lubrication, and insulin sensitivity all depend on it.
How does Anavar make testosterone cypionate more effective?
Oxandrolone suppresses SHBG production in the liver by up to 85%. SHBG is the protein that binds approximately 65 to 70% of your circulating testosterone and renders it biologically inactive. When SHBG drops, a much larger fraction of the testosterone you inject becomes free and available to enter cells and activate the androgen receptor. The practical result is that 200mg of testosterone cypionate with Anavar produces free testosterone levels comparable to 300 to 400mg without Anavar, but with less aromatisation, less water retention, and fewer androgen-related side effects. Wasserman et al. (2008) confirmed this interaction directly, documenting that oxandrolone combined with testosterone replacement drove SHBG so low that total testosterone readings appeared paradoxically suppressed because the binding protein was no longer holding testosterone in the blood.
What testosterone cypionate dose should I use with Anavar for cutting?
200 to 300mg per week, injected twice weekly. Because Anavar amplifies the effective testosterone dose through SHBG suppression, you do not need the 400 to 500mg+ that some protocols recommend. Lower testosterone means less aromatisation (less oestrogen, less water retention, less need for an aromatase inhibitor), lower haematocrit elevation, and a dryer visual result during the cut. The SHBG suppression from Anavar ensures you still get strong anabolic signalling from the moderate testosterone dose.
Why start testosterone two weeks before adding Anavar?
Testosterone cypionate takes 10 to 14 days to reach functionally stable blood levels due to its 5 to 6 day half-life. Starting it first ensures your androgen base is fully established before Anavar begins suppressing your natural production. It also gives you a clean 2-week window to assess how you feel on testosterone alone. If you experience unexpected side effects (injection site reactions, mood changes, allergic response), you can address them before adding a second compound that would make troubleshooting more difficult.
Do I need an aromatase inhibitor on this stack?
Often yes, even at moderate testosterone doses. Anavar’s SHBG suppression increases the amount of free testosterone available for aromatisation, which means your oestradiol level may be higher than expected for your testosterone dose. Start with anastrozole 0.25mg twice weekly (on injection days) and adjust based on symptoms and bloodwork. Do not preemptively use high AI doses; crashed oestrogen causes joint pain, killed libido, and worsened lipid profiles. Get a sensitive oestradiol assay at week 4 to 5 for data-driven dosing.
What PCT do I need after an Anavar and testosterone cypionate stack?
Wait approximately 14 days after the last testosterone cypionate injection for the ester to clear. During those 14 days, HCG at 1,000 to 1,500 IU twice weekly keeps your testicles responsive. Then run tamoxifen at 20mg per day for 4 weeks. Tamoxifen blocks oestrogen at the pituitary, allowing LH and FSH to rise, which restarts testicular testosterone production. Most men recover to low-normal testosterone within 4 to 6 weeks of starting PCT, with full recovery by 8 to 10 weeks. The Anavar itself clears within 48 to 72 hours of the last dose and does not delay PCT timing.
