Anavar, Clenbuterol, and T3: The Cutting Stack Explained With the Pharmacology That Makes It Work and the Interaction That Makes It Dangerous
The Anavar, Clenbuterol, and T3 stack is the most widely used multi-compound cutting protocol in bodybuilding. It is also the most commonly misunderstood. Users add all three compounds simultaneously, run them at arbitrary doses for arbitrary durations, and treat the stack as a single intervention rather than three pharmacologically distinct agents that interact with each other in ways that are both synergistic and dangerous. Each compound in this stack targets a different rate-limiting step in the fat loss process. Anavar preserves muscle through enhanced protein synthesis and nitrogen retention. Clenbuterol increases caloric expenditure through beta-2 receptor-mediated thermogenesis. T3 increases basal metabolic rate through direct thyroid hormone receptor activation. Together, they address every bottleneck in a severe cut. Separately, each one leaves a critical gap. The stack’s power lies in the convergence. The stack’s danger lies in a specific pharmacological interaction between T3 and Clenbuterol that most protocols ignore entirely. At Hemi Pharma UK, we cover this stack because we carry all three compounds, and the protocol that combines them deserves the same clinical precision as each individual compound receives on its own.
What Does Each Compound Target and Why Does the Stack Need All Three?
Imagine a caloric deficit as a factory production line with three stations. Station one determines how many calories your body burns at rest. Station two determines whether those burned calories come from fat or from muscle. Station three determines how fast the fat you have mobilised is actually oxidised. A severe cut stalls when any one station fails. The three-compound stack places a pharmacological accelerant at each station simultaneously.
T3 (liothyronine) sits at station one. It is a synthetic version of triiodothyronine, the active thyroid hormone that directly sets basal metabolic rate. At supraphysiological doses (25mcg to 75mcg daily, compared to the body’s endogenous production of approximately 30mcg daily), T3 increases resting energy expenditure by 10 to 15%, depending on dose. This means your body burns more calories at rest, deepening your effective caloric deficit without requiring you to eat less or move more. Idrees et al. (2024) in Current Medical Research and Opinion confirmed that liothyronine produces a more immediate and robust metabolic response than levothyroxine (T4) because it bypasses the peripheral deiodinase conversion step entirely (Idrees et al., 2024). The problem with T3 alone is that it does not discriminate between fat and muscle. At doses above 50mcg daily, it aggressively catabolises lean tissue alongside fat, undoing the body composition you are trying to improve.
Anavar sits at station two. Its role in this stack is entirely protective. As documented across our Anavar for recomp, Anavar calorie deficit, and Anavar results timeline articles, oxandrolone enhances protein synthesis by 44%, reduces amino acid efflux from muscle tissue, and preserves nitrogen balance even during significant caloric restriction. Without Anavar (or another anabolic agent), the T3-driven metabolic acceleration would consume muscle protein as readily as adipose tissue. With Anavar, the catabolic signal from T3 is partially opposed at the muscle level, directing the metabolic increase preferentially toward fat oxidation. This is not a complete blockade. At aggressive T3 doses, some lean tissue loss will still occur. But the magnitude is dramatically reduced compared to running T3 without anabolic protection.
Clenbuterol sits at station three. It is a beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that stimulates lipolysis (the release of fatty acids from adipocytes) and increases fat oxidation (the burning of those fatty acids for energy). As covered in our Anavar vs Clenbuterol article, the 2023 Remie et al. randomised controlled trial demonstrated that clenbuterol acutely increases energy expenditure through enhanced fat oxidation, with elevated plasma free fatty acid concentrations confirming direct adipocyte lipolysis. Clenbuterol’s contribution is additive to T3’s metabolic acceleration: T3 increases total energy expenditure, while clenbuterol ensures that a greater proportion of that expenditure is fuelled by fat rather than glycogen or muscle protein.
What Is the Dangerous Pharmacological Interaction Between T3 and Clenbuterol?
This is the section that every generic “Anavar Clen T3 stack” guide omits, and it is the most clinically important information in this article.
Thyroid hormones, including T3, upregulate beta-adrenergic receptor expression in cardiac and skeletal muscle tissue. When T3 levels are elevated above physiological range, the density of beta-1 and beta-2 receptors on cardiomyocytes increases. Clenbuterol is a beta-2 agonist. When you administer a beta agonist to a heart that has been primed by T3 to express more beta receptors, the cardiac stimulatory effect is amplified beyond what either compound would produce alone.
The practical consequence is that the tachycardia, palpitations, and cardiac workload increase from clenbuterol are meaningfully more intense when T3 is co-administered than when clenbuterol is used alone. A user who tolerates 80mcg of clenbuterol comfortably without T3 may experience uncomfortable tachycardia, chest tightness, or arrhythmia at the same clenbuterol dose when 50mcg of T3 is added. The risk is not additive. It is potentiating. T3 makes the heart more responsive to clenbuterol’s stimulatory signal by increasing the number of receptors available for clenbuterol to activate.
This interaction is the primary reason why the three-compound stack requires careful dose titration, sequential rather than simultaneous introduction, and ongoing cardiac monitoring (resting heart rate measurement morning and evening). It is also the reason why clenbuterol doses in this stack should be lower than in a clenbuterol-only protocol: the T3-mediated receptor upregulation means you need less clenbuterol to achieve the same thermogenic effect, and using the same dose as you would solo pushes the cardiac stimulus into dangerous territory.
How Do You Structure the Anavar Clen T3 Stack Week by Week?
The protocol below assumes a testosterone base of 150mg to 200mg weekly of testosterone cypionate or testosterone enanthate throughout. All three compounds in this stack are non-aromatising, and without a testosterone base providing oestradiol through aromatisation, the hormonal environment collapses as described in our Anavar only cycle and feel worse on Anavar articles.
Weeks 1 to 2: Anavar at 30mg to 40mg daily (split dosing). Anavar is introduced first, alone, to establish the anti-catabolic foundation before the metabolic accelerants are added. This allows you to assess your response to oxandrolone in isolation and establish baseline bloodwork mid-cycle if needed.
Week 3: Add T3 at 25mcg daily. This is the starting dose, low enough to produce a modest metabolic increase while you assess tolerance. Do not add clenbuterol yet. Allow one week to gauge the T3 response (slightly increased resting heart rate, mild warmth, improved energy) before introducing the beta agonist that T3 will potentiate.
Week 4: Add Clenbuterol at 20mcg daily. Titrate upward by 20mcg every 2 to 3 days to a maximum of 60mcg to 80mcg daily, monitoring resting heart rate each morning. If resting heart rate exceeds 100 bpm at any point, hold the dose and do not increase further. The T3-mediated receptor upregulation means you will likely reach effective thermogenic stimulus at a lower clenbuterol dose than you would without T3.
Weeks 4 to 6: All three compounds running. T3 can be increased to 50mcg daily during this window if fat loss has not accelerated sufficiently at 25mcg and cardiac parameters remain acceptable. Do not exceed 50mcg of T3 in this stack: the catabolic pressure at higher doses overwhelms even Anavar’s anti-catabolic capacity, and the cardiac potentiation with clenbuterol becomes disproportionately dangerous.
Week 7: Drop Clenbuterol (beta-2 receptor downregulation after 2 to 3 weeks of continuous use reduces its efficacy; as documented in our Anavar vs Clenbuterol article, the Remie 2023 RCT showed the fat oxidation advantage diminished after 2 weeks). Continue Anavar and T3.
Week 8: Begin tapering T3. Reduce from 50mcg to 25mcg for the final week. Abrupt cessation of exogenous T3 leaves the HPT axis suppressed (TSH is low from weeks of negative feedback), and the period between stopping T3 and the axis resuming endogenous production creates a transient hypothyroid window. Tapering reduces the depth of this window. Continue Anavar at full dose.
Week 9: Stop Anavar. Stop T3 (or reduce to 12.5mcg for a final 3 to 4 days if you prefer an even more gradual taper). As covered in our Anavar and thyroid article, the TSH suppression from exogenous T3 recovers within 2 to 6 weeks of cessation. Begin PCT for the testosterone base 14 to 21 days after the last injection (or continue TRT if applicable).
What Monitoring Does This Stack Require Beyond Standard Anavar Bloodwork?
The standard Anavar bloodwork protocol (as described in our Anavar bloodwork guide) forms the foundation: baseline panel, mid-cycle panel at week 4, and post-cycle panel. The three-compound stack adds two additional monitoring requirements.
First, daily resting heart rate measurement. Take your pulse each morning upon waking, before getting out of bed, for 60 seconds. Record the number. Your pre-stack baseline (on testosterone alone, before any of the three compounds) should be 55 to 75 bpm. During the stack, a rise to 80 to 90 bpm is expected and acceptable. A sustained resting heart rate above 100 bpm, or any episode of irregular rhythm (skipped beats, fluttering, rapid pounding at rest), warrants immediate reduction or cessation of the clenbuterol dose. The T3-clenbuterol cardiac interaction makes this monitoring non-negotiable.
Second, thyroid function testing. Add free T4, free T3, and TSH to your mid-cycle bloodwork panel. During the stack, your TSH will be suppressed (near zero) and your free T3 will be elevated (reflecting the exogenous dose). This is expected and not a concern during active use. The important test is the post-cycle thyroid panel at 4 to 6 weeks after stopping T3, which confirms that TSH has recovered and the HPT axis has resumed endogenous thyroid hormone production. As covered in our Anavar and thyroid article, this recovery typically occurs within 2 to 6 weeks and does not require pharmacological intervention in individuals with previously normal thyroid function.
Who Should and Should Not Run the Anavar Clen T3 Stack?
This stack is an advanced cutting protocol. It is not appropriate for beginners (use our Anavar first cycle article to establish your foundation first), for users with pre-existing cardiac conditions (the T3-clenbuterol interaction amplifies cardiac stress), or for users with thyroid disease (exogenous T3 disrupts an already-compromised HPT axis in unpredictable ways).
The stack is appropriate for experienced users with normal cardiac function, normal thyroid function, and at least one prior cycle’s experience with Anavar and a testosterone base. Ideally, you have run clenbuterol separately at least once to establish your individual dose tolerance before introducing it into a stack where T3 will amplify its cardiac effects.
Women should not run this three-compound stack. The combination of Anavar (even at female doses of 5mg to 10mg), clenbuterol (which produces dose-dependent tremor and tachycardia), and T3 (which is catabolic without robust anabolic protection) creates a risk-benefit profile that is unfavourable for female athletes. Women who want pharmacological cutting support should use Anavar alone at low doses, as covered in our Anavar for women article.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run all three compounds from day one instead of introducing them sequentially?
You can, but you should not. Sequential introduction allows you to identify which compound is producing any side effect that appears. If you start all three simultaneously and develop tachycardia on day 3, you do not know whether it is from the clenbuterol, the T3-clenbuterol interaction, or the combined stimulatory effect. Starting Anavar first (weeks 1 to 2), adding T3 (week 3), then adding clenbuterol (week 4) gives you a clear diagnostic timeline. This approach also allows the anti-catabolic protection from Anavar to be established before the catabolic T3 is introduced.
Do I need to taper T3 or can I stop it abruptly?
Tapering is recommended. Abrupt cessation of exogenous T3 leaves the HPT axis suppressed, creating a transient hypothyroid window (reduced metabolic rate, fatigue, potential weight rebound) until endogenous production resumes. A 1-week taper from your working dose to 25mcg to 12.5mcg reduces the depth of this suppression. The thyroid will recover regardless (as confirmed in our Anavar and thyroid article), but tapering makes the transition smoother and reduces the metabolic rebound that can undo some of the fat loss achieved during the stack.
Why is Anavar specifically recommended over other anabolic steroids in this stack?
Three reasons. First, Anavar does not aromatise, so it does not add oestrogen-mediated water retention that would obscure the visual results of the cut. Second, Anavar does not cause the fluid retention that injectable compounds like nandrolone or high-dose testosterone produce. Third, Anavar’s specific creatine phosphate resynthesis mechanism preserves strength during a deep deficit, allowing training intensity to be maintained even as caloric intake falls. Other oral steroids (Winstrol, for example) could substitute pharmacologically, but Anavar has the strongest clinical evidence for lean mass preservation during catabolic states and the mildest hepatotoxicity profile among common 17-alpha-alkylated orals.
What results should I expect from the Anavar Clen T3 stack over 8 weeks?
With a 500 kcal daily deficit, adequate protein (2.2g to 2.5g per kg daily), and consistent resistance training: approximately 3 to 5kg of fat loss, maintenance or slight increase of lean mass (0 to 1kg gain), measurable waist circumference reduction, significantly improved muscle definition and vascularity, and preserved or improved strength on compound lifts. Scale weight may decrease by 2 to 4kg (fat loss partially offset by lean mass preservation). These estimates are for an experienced user with body fat in the 12 to 18% range. Users starting at higher body fat percentages may lose more total fat; users at very low body fat may find diminishing returns.
Is this stack safe?
No multi-compound pharmaceutical protocol is categorically “safe.” The specific risks of this stack are: cardiac stress from the T3-clenbuterol interaction (managed by sequential introduction, low clenbuterol dosing, and daily heart rate monitoring), HDL suppression from Anavar (managed by limiting oral steroid duration to 6 to 8 weeks and monitoring lipids), thyroid suppression from exogenous T3 (managed by tapering and post-cycle thyroid panel), and HPTA suppression from Anavar plus testosterone base (managed by PCT as described in our Anavar PCT article). Each risk is quantifiable and manageable, but only with the monitoring and dose discipline described in this protocol. Users who skip the monitoring, ignore cardiac symptoms, or extend the stack beyond the recommended duration are taking on risk that the protocol is designed to contain.
